SUMMER MIXES! MUY TROPICAL!!

It's that time of year when we say good bye winter and hello summer! I've been working in the lab and have 2 new mixes that are ready for the streets. First I have started a new mixtape series called "PARTY HARD". The Party Hard mixtape series will be focusing on all types of new Tropical and Caribbean influenced music such as soca, dancehall, uk funky, salsa, meringue, tropical bass, and moombahton. I was very influenced by DONAE'O ' s new tune "PARTY HARD", which inspired me to start this mix series with this vibe. The mix features all new tunes from Collie Buddz's new record "Alchy Ride", Maluca's "Que Que", and Mr. Lexx and Munchi's "Shottas".

The second mix ready for your summer ipod playlist is another new mixtape series I've started called "PURE VIBES". This mix series focuses on positive and lovers rock reggae selections old and new. You will find one drop selections from Protoje, Collie Buddz, Mr. Vegas, Gappy Ranks, Jahdan Blakkamoore, Vybz Kartel, and more in this mix. Make sure you get a rum and Red Bull and catch the vibes pon di dancefloor!!

While I was gone this past month out in the Caribbean I didn't get a chance to pay my respects to the great Mr. Gregory "THE COOL RULER" Issacs, 59 yet. We lost not just another great reggae artist but a LEGEND! Issacs was well known for his soulful vocalizing and "lover's rock" sound. He has blessed us with many classics that you've all heard many times. Night Nurse, Number one, My Only Lover, Rumors, Hush Darling, and Slave Master are just a few big chunes from the great Ruler. He has released literally over 500 albums during his short time here. Rasta does not die, because his music will live on. Rest in Power.

I've got to say with a lot of this "hipster rap" coming out these days it's been a little distant from what I remember hip hop being about. It's cool, I'm not hating on any of it.... but I will say the game is in need of some one to stand out and take the lead. With Drake and Yeezy and everyone else running the charts it's easy not even to notice some one like Vado. But let me tell you this dude has got the streets on smash right now.... and teaming up with Cam'ron is a super good look. I recently saw Dj Soul post a sample to this record and forgot that he spit a Big L verse at the end. Harlem stand up.

Myself and former crew (The Party) had a showcase and featured them as our headliner (all courtesy of Knox !!) alongside Ghosthuslter (now VEGA), Queen Majesy (dj set), Devlin of Spankrock BBC (dj set), and more .. you get the idea. Nas and Damian Marley have been working on this project for some time now, and I really like the tunes that have come out. Everyone knows Nas and Damian both have deep roots in hip hop and reggae royalty, and you can call them both iconic musicians. Damian being the youngest son of Bob Marley and Cindy Breakspeare, and nicknamed "Junior Gong" after his fathers "Tuff Gong". He has had much success in the past few years with tunes "My name is Jr. Gong", "More Justice", "The Mission", and "Welcome to Jamrock" too name a few. Nas has been a major force in the hip hop world since his freshman album "Illmatic". Which all hip hop heads know the "The World Is Yours", "It Ain't Hard to Tell", and "One Love". He went on to release many other hits including "Hate me now", "Nas is like", and recent "Hip hop is dead". The album "Distant Relatives" is described to be about Nas and Damian’s relationship, and also their shared African ancestry. This tune was sampled from a Dennis Brown song by the name of "Promise Land" (which is posted below). They have incorporated Dennis Brown on the track and I really like the vibes. The original track is basically untouched with Nas and Damian along side Dennis.

The album is scheduled to be released on May 18th.

Nick “Nick Nack” Malkiewicz is a practicing proponent of true-school hip-hop. Combining the sensibilities of a DJ with that of a cultural visionary, he has been quite productive in his home state of Texas as both a creator of original music and a provider of opportunities for fellow artists. His masterwork to date, 2001’s Re: Construction, features a wide array of Lone Star MCs and turntablists. Beginning his career as a battle DJ, Nick Nack first made a name for himself in 1995 by placing second in a Soundwars competition held in Dallas. As a student at the University of Texas, he hosted a radio program on Austin’s KVRX and spearheaded a collaboration between Prince Poetry of Organized Konfusion and an MC named QB that culminated in a single titled “Long Distance” on Five Finger Records. He also began producing, and started up his own record label. Between 1999 and 2000, he recorded a beats tape (In the Nick of Time) and a Soundscape single, both released on his own Crowd Control label. Teaming up with Austin freestyle champion Bavu Blakes to comprise Soundscape, the duo scored an underground hit with “Listeners.” His 2001 full-length, Re: Construction featured appearances from the likes of Environment, Head Krack, Tray God, Disgruntled Seeds, Lyrik, Enfoe, and Poetree, as well as Bavu Blakes and K-Otix. Nick Nack continued his search for challenges by joining a jazz ensemble called Blaze.

Dj Soul just dropped this mixtape entitled "No Idea's Original". Which features lots of samples of big tunes this past year.

This 70 minute mix is made up of 50 samples that ruled 2009. The mix was posted earlier Monday afternoon on Rap Radar. In case you missed it, you can download it here.

First off, I want to thank Elliott Wilson for allowing me to do this project! Second, I want to thank Dro and The Burn It Down Music Group for hooking it up. Shouts also to Denis (from Mighty Healthy) for coming thru at the last minute with the artwork.

My homie Dayta put me on to this video a few weeks ago. Here is a little about it from NO MAS.

In celebration of the greatest athletic achievement by a man on a psychedelic journey, No Mas and artist James Blagden proudly present the animated tale of Dock Ellis' legendary LSD no-hitter. In the past few years weve heard all too much about performance enhancing drugs from greenies to tetrahydrogestrinone, and not enough about performance inhibiting drugs. If our evaluation of the records of athletes like Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens, Marion Jones, and Barry Bonds needs to be revised downwards with an asterisk, we submit that that Dock Ellis record deserves a giant exclamation point. Of the 263 no-hitters ever thrown in the Big Leagues, we can only guess how many were aided by steroids, but we can say without question that only one was ever thrown on acid.

Sadly, the great Dock Ellis died last December at 63. A year before, radio producers Donnell Alexander and Neille Ilel, had recorded an interview with Ellis in which the former Pirate right hander gave a moment by moment account of June 12, 1970, the day he no-hit the San Diego Padres. Alexander and Ilels original four minute piece appeared March 29, 2008 on NPRs Weekend America. When we stumbled across that piece this past June, Blagden and Isenberg were inspired to create a short animated film around the original audio.

This car collab came out a few months ago and I'm assuming you have all ready seen this. If not, Jeff STAPLE along with KIA collaborated together on a KIA SOUL. The results turned out really nice. If anyone knows me well you all ready know I HATE CARS. (cash black hole) But if I had the option of picking a brand new car right now based on looks alone I think this would get my choice. Great design idea of incorporating a rain camo into the paint scheme of this car (SOUL).
